January[]

February[]

  • c. 1 February: Hermione leaves the Hospital Wing. That evening, she looks at Tom Riddle's Diary.[3]
  • c. 2 February: Harry looks at Tom Riddle's Special Award for Services to the School.[4]
    • Harry continues to be suspected of opening the Chamber of Secrets but the monster hasn't petrified anyone in ages and Lockhart begins gloating he has saved the day by simply being around.[2]
  • 14 February: Lockhart has a Valentine's Day event at Hogwarts.[2]
    • Harry writes in the Diary and Tom Riddle writes back. They communicate about the Chamber of Secrets. Tom takes Harry into the Diary and shows him Hagrid had opened the Chamber of Secrets fifty years ago.[5]

March[]

  • 1 March - c. 17 March: Harry, Ron and Hermione say nothing to Hagrid about their discovery but will if anyone else gets petrified. Life improves for Harry now the petrifications appear to be over.[6]
  • c. 18 March: The Mandrakes throw a party which Professor Sprout is very happy about because it's a sign they are close to using them to produce a potion to bring the petrified back to life.[7]

March - April[]

  • Late March - April: Easter holidays begin and end. Harry, Ron and Hermione choose the new school subjects they would like to take in their third year. The Gryffindor Quidditch team practice every day for their next game against Hufflepuff.[8]

May[]

  • c. 8 May on Friday evening: Ginny steals Tom Riddle's Diary in Harry's room.[9]
  • c. 9 May on Saturday: Harry hears the voice of the Serpent of Slytherin whispering about killing for the first time in months. Hermione realises she has worked something out and goes to the Hogwarts library. She and Penelope Clearwater are Petrified. Quidditch is cancelled.[10]
    • Harry and Ron sneak out to ask Hagrid about what Tom Riddle showed them. Cornelius Fudge takes Hagrid to Azkaban. Dumbledore is sacked for incompetency. Hagrid shouts out for Harry and Ron, who are hiding, to follow the spiders to find out the truth.[8]
  • c. 10 May - 23 May[11]: The school fears what will happen now that Dumbledore is gone. The Hospital Wing bans anyone visiting the Petrified. Harry and Ron search for spiders in the school but they can't find any. Teachers start taking students to every lesson so they aren't on their own.[12]
  • 24 May: Draco laughs about what happened to Hagrid and Dumbledore. He hopes they find a Head willing to keep the Chamber of Secrets open. Ron and Draco fight. Lockhart is supportive of Hagrid's guilt, angering Harry.[12]
    • Harry and Ron sneak out and find Aragog. He tells them Hagrid is not the one who opened the Chamber fifty years ago, and the girl who died is still at Hogwarts. Harry and Ron run away when Aragog lets other spiders try and eat them. Harry figures out the girl is Myrtle Warren.[12]
  • 25 May: It is announced that examinations will commence in one week.[13]
  • 30 May: The Mandrake Restorative Draught is ready and petrified people will be brought back by the end of the day. Harry works out where the entrance for the Chamber of Secrets is.[14]
    • Ginny Weasley is taken into the Chamber of Secrets. The teachers let Lockhart go and save Ginny because he had claims to know where the entrance to the Chamber is. He tries to run away but Harry and Ron force Lockhart to stay and help.[15]
    • Harry, Ron and Lockhart find the Chamber of Secrets. Harry and Ron are separated when Lockhart is hit with his own Memory Charm, causing rocks to fall.[15]
    • Harry finds Ginny and confronts the memory of Tom Riddle. He tells Harry that he is the boy who became Voldemort. Harry defeats the Basilisk and saves Ginny with the help of Fawkes and the Sorting Hat. He destroys Tom Riddle's Diary.[16]
  • 31 May: Harry and Ron are given the Special Award for Services to the School and win 400 House points for Gryffindor, winning the House Cup. Every examination is cancelled.[17]

May - June[]

  • Late May - mid June: Lucius Malfoy is sacked by the Board of Governors.[17]
  • Mid June: Harry and the other students head home for the summer and use magic for the last time before September. Harry gives Ron the phone number for 4 Privet Drive.[18]
  • c. 25 June: Ron phones Harry but Vernon picks up. He shouts down the phone at Vernon who gets angry at Harry for giving his number to his friend. It causes a huge argument with Harry.[19]

July[]

  • Late July: Arthur Weasley wins seven-hundred galleons. He takes the Weasley family on holiday for a month to spend time with Bill Weasley.[20]
  • 30 July: Neville Longbottom's thirteenth birthday. Harry Potter stays up late at Privet Drive doing homework.[22]
  • 31 July: Harry Potter's thirteenth birthday. He receives letters and packages at about 1am.[23]
    • Hogsmeade permission letters arrives for those about to begin their third year at Hogwarts.
    • Sirius Black is mentioned on Muggle television, telling them he is dangerous and any sightings need to be phoned in. However, they don't say where he escaped from or what his crime is.[23]
    • Aunt Marge arrives for a seven day stay at Privet Drive. Harry is warned to say nothing to Marge about magic.
    • Marge says rude things about Lily Potter and Harry. Harry causes Marge's glass to break but Vernon and Petunia couldn't prove it was caused by his magic.[24]

August[]

  • 1 August - 3 August: Harry gets through the first three days of Marge's stay and her taunting by thinking about the new book Hermione gifted him about broomsticks.[25]
  • 6 August: The final evening of Marge's stay. Harry shouts at her for insulting his parents which causes an argument. He accidentally inflates her. He decides to run away, packing everything he needs and leaving Privet Drive.[26]
    • Harry notices the Animagus form of Sirius Black watching him nearby. The Knight Bus shows up and takes him to the Leaky Cauldron. Cornelius Fudge lets Harry off for underage magic. Harry decides to live at the pub until summer is over.[27]
  • 7 August - 12 August: Harry spends days shopping in Diagon Alley.[28]
  • 13 August: The Firebolt is launched which is better than any other broom in production.[29]
  • 14 August - 30 August: Harry purchases new school books and bumps into school friends while shopping.[28]
  • 31 August: Harry is joined by Ron and Hermione for the last day of summer. Arthur impliescHarry needed to know something important about Sirius but Molly persuades him not to tell. Harry later hears them saying Sirius wants to kill Harry.[30]

September[]

  • 1 September: Harry promises Arthur he won't go looking for Sirius Black. He takes the train to school on which is introduced to Professor Lupin. A Dementor searchescthe train for Sirius and attacks Harry who faints. Lupin saves Harry.[31]
    • Dumbledore tells the school that Dementors will be guarding it at every entrance to get Sirius Black if he shows up.[31]
  • 2 September: Harry fnds out in Divination that he has the image of a Grim in his teacup and it means he will die very soon. Hermione attends three subjects in one morning at the same time using a Time-Turner.[32]
  • c. 3 September (Thursday): Draco leaves the Hospital Wing and spendscthe day whining about Hagrid and Buckbeak. He later admits he is faking his pain because he wants Hagrid to get sacked.[34]
    • Draco implies that Sirius Black has done something so horrible to Harry that he should hunt down and punish him. Harry is confused.[35]
    • Professor Lupin teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts and introduces everyone to Boggarts. Harry's takes the shape of a Dementor. Lupin intervenes rather than let Harry face it.[35]
  • c. 7 September: Lupin's third-year essay about Boggarts is due.[35]
  • c. 8 September - 30 September: Professor Lupin's Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons are very popular. Harry begins to regret taking Divination. Hagrid no longer has any confidence in teaching and teachesthird-years about the Flobberworm which they find very boring.[36]

October[]

  • c. 1 October - 4 October (Thursday): Oliver Wood holds a tactic meeting for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. They are told they have to win the Inter-House Quidditch Cup that year because he is graduating.[37] He starts holding Quidditch training three times a week.[36]
  • 15 October: After another Quidditch training session, Crookshanks tries to eat Scabbers. Ron is very angry at Crookshanks and Hermione.[38]
  • 16 October: Lavender Brown finds out that her rabbit Binky was killed by a fox.[39]
  • 31 October (Saturday[40]): Ron and Hermione go to Hogsmeade without Harry, who spends the day talking to Lupin about the Boggart. Harry finds out Lupin drinks a potion every day, which Lupin claims is because he feels unwell.[41]
    • Sirius tries to get in the Gryffindor common room and attacks the painting of the Fat Lady. She runs to hide in another painting. Everyone has to sleep in the Great Hall when the teachers search for Sirius.[36]

November[]

  • 1 November (Sunday): In the early hours of the morning, the search for Sirius Black continues.[42]
  • 2 - 5 November: The school keeps talking about what happened with Sirius and the Fat Lady. Professor Hooch keeps an eye on Gryffindor Quidditch training practices in case Sirius attempts to kill Harry.[43]
    • Bad weather encourages the Slytherin Quidditch team to get out of playing their game on Saturday. They use Draco's injury to switch with Hufflepuff.[42]
    • At the last Gryffindor Quidditch training practice, Wood finds out they are playing Huffelpuff instead of Slytherin first. Wood starts panicking.[44]
  • 6 November (Friday): The wind and rain doesn't improve. Wood keeps finding Harry throughout the day to give advice, causing him to be late for Defence Against the Dark Arts. Lupin is too sick to teach, so Snape teaches them about werewolves and is very critical of Lupin's teaching.[45]
  • 7 November (Saturday[46]): Harry wakes up early and finds Crookshanks trying to get in his room. During the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff match, the weather is nearly unmanageable. Gryffindor takes an early lead but Dementors invade the pitch and attack Harry after he notices the Grim in the sky.[42]
  • 8 November (Sunday[48]): Harry spends another day in the Hospital Wing. He figures out it is Lily's voice he hears around Dementors. That evening, he leaves the Hospital Wing.[47]
  • 9 November (Monday[49]): Draco keeps taunting Harry throughout the day. Lupin is teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts again and he later promises to teach Harry a way to combat the Dementors in the new year.[47]
  • End of November: Ravenclaw beat Hufflepuff by a large margin in their Quidditch game.[47]

November - December[]

  • Late November - Early December: Wood begins training the Gryffindor Quidditch team tougher than ever, even in the rain.[50]

December[]

  • c. 1 December: It starts snowing in time for the Christmas holidays and the castle is decorated. Harry, Ron and Hermione sign up to stay at Hogwarts when term ends.[51]
  • c. 17 December (Saturday): On the last weekend before the holidays, another Hogsmeade trip takes place.[52]
    • Fred and George Weasley give Harry the Marauder's Map which shows him a way to sneak into Hogsmeade and go shopping.[47]
    • Harry hears a conversation in the pub about Sirius Black. He learns he is his godfather who betrayed James and Lily Potter. Harry is devastated.[47]
  • c. 18 December (Sunday): Harry can't sleep very well now he knows about Sirius, James and Lily.[53]
    • Term ends and the holidays start. Ron and Hermione persuade Harry not to kill Sirius.[54]
    • Harry, Ron and Hermione find out from Hagrid that the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures will be deciding the fate of Buckbeak.[54]
  • c. 19 December: Harry, Ron and Hermione spend time in the Higwarts library looking for a way to save Buckbeak.[55]
  • 25 December: Harry opens a present, a Firebolt but it doesn't say who it sent it. Hermione suspects it was sent by Sirius. She tells Professor McGonagall who confiscates it to investigate for jinxes. Harry and Ron fall out with Hermione.[54]
