Amos Diggory is a wizard and character in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He is the father of Cedric Diggory, who is tragically killed during the final task of the Triwizard Tournament by Voldemort.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Amos and his wife had one child, Cedric Diggory. They lived in Ottery St Catchpole.[1]
Goblet of Fire[]
Amos got tickets to the final of the 422nd Quidditch World Cup. He and Cedric walked to the top of Stoatshead Hill very early in the morning to travel there by Portkey. After finding the Portkey, they were joined by Arthur Weasley who introduced him to his children, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny and their friends, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter.[1]
Upon realising Harry Potter was with them, Amos curiously looked at him and his scar. He told Harry that he had heard about him from Cedric and how Hufflepuff, with Cedric as Seeker, had defeated Gryffindor with Harry as Seeker in a Quidditch match the year before. Amos proudly bragged about Cedric's victory to the annoyance of Fred and George. Cedric tried to correct his father by pointing out he only won because Harry fell from his broom (due to Dementors), but Amos laughed that Cedric didn't fall and that the best man won.[1]
The two Diggorys did not stay in the same campsite that the Weasleys had booked. Amos did not reappear until after the final, when a Death Eaters attack was occurring in the campsite. He joined other Ministry officials, which included Barty Crouch Snr. and Arthur, during the counterattack. When the Dark Mark appeared in the sky, they Apparated to the scene and use Stunning Spells to try and apprehend the culprit. They were too late and nearly struck Harry, Ron and Hermione instead.[2]
Amos did not appear to agree with Barty that Harry, Ron and Hermione were responsible. He searched behind the trees nearby which their Stunners flew through in case the culprit was still there. He discovered, to his surprise, Barty's house-elf Winky lying unconscious and holding a wand in her hand. He quietly said to Arthur that this was embarrassing for Barty and that the house-elf had broken the Code of Wand Use. Amos was intent on holding Winky responsible for producing the Dark Mark, pointing out she was found at the scene with a wand. He revived her and started questioning her, referring to her as "elf" and demanded an explanation. Winky denied being responsible and told him she did not know how to produce the Dark Mark. Harry then realised the wand she had was his own that he had dropped earlier on. Amos then asked Harry if he was responsible but conceded that he would not support Voldemort when called out by Arthur.[2]
Amos then returned to questioning Winky, who continued to refuse responsibility. Amos then decided to prove it by using Prior Incantato to reveal the last spell produced by the wand. When the wand recast the Dark Mark into the sky, which he quickly reversed, he considered that proof that she produced it. He grew irate and roared at her when she continued to deny it, until Arthur asked him to consider where she would have learned to produce such a spell. Barty asked whether Amos was suggesting he had taught his elf to use Dark magic, and whether he had forgotten his life's work of fighting the Dark Arts and those who use it. Amos apologised and assured him he did not mean that. Arthur told him Winky likely found the wand after the true culprit used and left it behind. Amos asked Winky if she saw who it was, but she told him said she did not. He then reluctantly let Barty punish her of his own accord instead of taking her into questioning in his department at work.[2]
Appearance[]
