Apparition is a form of transportation in the wizarding world. The witch or wizard has to picture the destination in their mind, and with determination and deliberation, they will disappear and materialise in a different place. If they botch it, they will cause an injury to themselves. When someone leaves a place this way, it is called Disapparition.

About[]

To successfully Apparate, there are three important steps. The traveller has to be determined to get to the destination by moving in deliberation. Any attempt to Apparate is normally carried out with a wand, but wandless Apparition is possible for skilled witches and wizards. The range that can be travelled is limited, and the further away the destination is, the more difficult it is to Apparate there.[1][2] Apparition is increasingly unreliable across long distances. Only highly skilled witches and wizards should try and Apparate across continents.[1]

The witch or wizard has to imagine their destination very clearly and accurately. A photograph can help to ensure a successful Apparition. An audible noise is heard when someone Apparates. It is possible to block Apparition to a specific place, or only allow specific people with permission to Apparate to and from them, like Hogwarts Castle.

Splinching happens when one is not determined enough to get to the destination which causes body parts to get left behind. For example, Susan Bones splinched her leg off and it had to be reattached.[1] There are plenty of people who do not bother with Apparition because of the risks and prefer to use slower, but safer broomsticks.[3]

When there is a Quidditch World Cup, safe points are set up well away from Muggles for people to Apparate to. This is called the Apparition point.[3]

License[]

Apparition is only legal for those who are of age and have obtained a license through the Department of Magical Transportation. Apparating without a license will result in a fine. The legal age is seventeen.[3]

Side-along Apparition[]

Side-along Apparition is where a witch or wizard who can Apparate carries another person with them. This usually happens when an adult has to take a child who can't yet Apparate.

This type of Apparition is achieved by holding onto the arm or hand of the person who can Apparate. It is encouraged by the Ministry of Magic if there is danger. Side-along Apparition does not need to happen willingly and also occurs when contact is unintentional. For example, Corbin Yaxley held Hermione Granger's arm when she Apparated with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley.

Animal Apparition[]

There are animals with the innate ability to Apparate without limitations. They also know how to side-along Apparate. House-elves can Apparate by clicking their fingers.[4] The Diricawl is also able to Apparate at will.[5]

History[]

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has an enchantment put on the castle to prevent Apparition into the school.[6]

Charlie Weasley had to take the test to Apparate twice after he travelled five miles south of where he was supposed to and landed on an old woman doing her shopping. Percy Weasley passed his license to Apparate shortly after graduating from Hogwarts. He started Apparating down the stairs of the Burrow just to show off to his siblings.[3]

During the 422nd Quidditch World Cup, a couple of people tried to Apparate without a license, were splinched in process and were caught by the authorities. They received a fine. During the tournament, the Apparition point was in a wood area.[3] After someone produced the Dark Mark in the sky above the campsites for the spectators, several Ministry officials Apparated to the scene to try and apprehend the culprit.[7]
