Harry Potter Books Wiki

Augusta Longbottom is a character in the Harry Potter book series. Augusta is a witch and the formidale grandmother of Neville Longbottom. She has one child, Frank Longbottom. Frank and Alice Longbottom are incapacitated at the end of the First Wizarding War so Augusta brings up their only child, Neville.

Biography[]

In her school years, Augusta failed Charms at Ordinary Wizarding Level which caused her to think it was a "soft option".[1] Augusta later married and her husband had one child, Frank Longbottom. Frank later married Alice Longbottom and they gave her one grandchild, Neville Longbottom in July 1980.

At the end of the First Wizarding War, Frank and Alice Longbottom were tortured into insanity by Death Eaters including Bellatrix Lestrange. They were taken to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries where they would stay for the rest of their lives. Neville was left in the care of Augusta who raised him. She was exceptionally proud of Frank and Alice.[2]

Around the time Neville was eight, he had not shown any magical talent and the Longbottom family started to worry that he was a Squib. Neville's great-uncle Algie hung him out the window to push him into using magic and dropped him by accident. Neville bounced down the garden to the road, proving he was in fact a wizard. Augusta was so happy she cried.[3] In childhood, Augusta did't let Neville go on a broomstick because he was prone to getting hurt.[4] At one point prior to September 1992, she sent him a Howler but it's unknown why.[5]

Philosopher's Stone[]

In September 1991, she took Neville to King's Cross in order to get the train to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He lost Trevor on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Harry heard her scorning him when he passed them.[6] Knowing how forgetful Neville was, she sent him a Remembrall.[7]

Prisoner of Azkaban[]

In August 1993, Augusta took Neville shopping to Diagon Alley where he lost a note of books he needed to get. Harry saw her berating Neville for losing it.[8]

Goblet of Fire[]

Augusta refused to buy tickets to the 422nd Quidditch World Cup for Neville.[9]

Appearance[]

Augusta is "formidable looking".[8]

Trivia[]

  • Augusta and Minerva McGonagall could have attended Hogwarts at the same time. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, she knew that Augusta had failed her Charms exam at O.W.L. level. She couldn't have taught Augusta because both were in their elderly age at that time. If they attended school together, she could have known Augusta's grade.[1]
