The Captain of the Brigade of Witch-Hunters is a fictional character in both the real-world and in-universe versions of The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Story[]

After the King decided he should be the only one to have the magic in the world, he created the Brigade of Witch-Hunters. At a performance of his magic to prove to his kingdom, the Captain brings their prized largest black hound, Sabre, who he says died after eating poisonous toadstool. He asks the King to bring Sabre back to life and heaves the dead body onto the stage.[1]

However the King is unaware he isn't really producing magic so far - a charlatan has threatened a real witch, Babbitty Rabbitty, into doing the spells in secret. When the King fails because magic cannot revive the dead and Babbitty can't do what they ask, the charlatan points out Babbitty and says she is an evil witch blocking their spells. With the Brigade, the Captain chases her until she appears to run inside a tree.[1]

The King has the tree felled but the voice of Babbitty is heard cackling in the stump. She says real witches and wizards cannot be killed by getting chopped in half and invites them to chop the charlatan in half to prove it. The Captain is eager to chop him with his axe, but the charlatan admits he isn't a real wizard and is instead dragged off to the castle dungeons. The King later promises Babbitty he will stop hurting witches and wizards so he disbands the Brigade.[1]
