About[]

The Caretaker at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry didn't necessarily have to use magic. Argus Filch was a Squib and was still given the role. They havr their own office. Their main duty is to keep the school tidy and clean.[1] They patrol corridors, especially at night[2] to ensure students were well-behaved and they could punish students who break the school rules.[1][3][4] This includes sending students to their Head of House.[4][5] They could also give detentions by filling in a record form. Filch had a office of labelled filing cabinets with lists of every student and what they did wrong[1], and a cabinet for confiscated and dangerous objects.[3][1]

Filch's specific duties have included checking which students had permission to go to Hogsmeade[6][7], supporting staff and standing guard, conducting searches and evacuations[8][9][10][11], fixing broken portraits[9] and doors[10] and adding chairs to the High Table when needed.[12] Caretakers knew the layout of the school best. Filch was thought to have known at least four of seven secret passageways.[3] In the distant past, they used to be in charge of corporal punishment which involved caning and using chains.[1][3]

History[]

Argus Filch was a very strict Caretaker who gave lists of what he considered forbidden objects to the Head of Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore and asked him to keep informing students about the school rules.[13][14][15][16] He had a cat, Mrs Norris who helped him keep an eye on everyone. They were very unpopular.[17][18]
