A cat is a domesticated furry animal which appears throughout the Harry Potter book series. They are a pet in the wizarding world.
About[]
Cats are a choice of pet that students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can consider bringing to the school, along with owls or a toad.[1] They are a possible Animagus form, one which Minerva McGonagall could transform into.[2] A cat is also a possible Patronus Charm.[3] The Magical Menagerie sells cats.[4]
History[]
Minerva McGonagall could transform into a cat after she trained to be Animagi. The day Harry Potter was taken to Privet Drive, she stayed in the road in the form of a tabby cat watching the house while she waited for Albus Dumbledore to arrive. Vernon Dursley saw her reading a sign which shocked him.[2]
Rubeus Hagrid once told Harry that he didn't like cats because they made him sneeze.[1]
In her second year, Hermione Granger created a Polyjuice Potion. She intended to transform into Millicent Bulstrode so she took a hair off her robe. Unfortunately, it was her cat's hair. The potion cannot fully transform someone into an animal so it caused her to turn half-human, half-cat. She had to spend the Christmas holidays in the Hospital Wing until she returned to normal.[5]
For her third year, Hermione's parents decided she could buy an owl to take with her to Hogwarts. While she was browsing the Magical Menagerie, a half-cat, half-Kneazle called Crookshanks tried to attack Scabbers. After hearing how long Crookshanks had lived in the shop for, Hermione decided to adopt him.[4]
