Charms is a subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Every student has to study it from the first year until the fifth year. They learn how to produce spells which is an essential part of wizarding life with a focus on pronunciation and wand movement. If they achieve a high enough pass grade during theirnO.W.L.s, students have the option of studying it for their N.E.W.T.s. It is a valuable grade to have for any profession.
About[]
Every student has to take the subject from their first year through to sitting the O.W.L.s in their fifth year. If they achieve a high pass grade, they have the option of continuing their study for their N.E.W.T.s.[2] They learn a variety of charms that advance throughout their education. They study using both books and practical work during the students are often paired up. Charms is essential in every branch of magic.[3]
During the O.W.L. exam, students take both a theory and practical test. They perform spells to get a score. During the time that Filius Flitwick taught the subject, potential students needed to get at least an "Exceeds Expectation" to study it for their N.E.W.T.s. It is considered easier and less complex than Transfiguration, providing the opportunity for personal creativity.[4]
History[]
Hermione Granger achieved 110% in her end-of-year Charms exam in her first year.[5] In her first and second years at Hogwarts, it was Hermione Granger's favourite subject[3] until she started taking Arithmancy.[6] During her fourth year, Professor Flitwick let his students play games instead studying because they could not concentrate during the build-up to the Yule Ball.[7]
Neville Longbottom decided not to studying it for his N.E.W.T.s because his grandmother Augusta Longbottom encouraged her grandson to drop it, calling it the "softer option". She preferred Neville to take Transfiguration instead. When she attended Hogwarts, she had failed her O.W.L. exam which gave her a negative opinion of the subject. However, he did end up taking Charms which he had a high O.W.L grade for.[2]
