Professor Cuthbert Binns is a character in the Harry Potter book series.
He is a wizard and ghost, and Professor of History of Magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Binns passed away in a chair in the staff-room and then became a ghost, getting back up and continuing to teach. He is known for being very boring and droning on.
Biography[]
Philosopher's Stone[]
Binns began teaching at Hogwarts at an unknown date, and he was still teaching at an elderly age. He took a nap in a chair one day in the staff-room, and died in the chair. But instead of passing on, he became a ghost and he just got back up and continued to teach. He got to keep the job he had when he was living.[1]
Binns was not a favourite Professor of the students, because he droned on and on which made the subject he taught exceptionally boring.[1]
Chamber of Secrets[]
He entered the classroom by flying through the blackboard, and he had a knack of calling students the wrong name, even calling Hermione "Miss Grant" when she had told him she was "Miss Granger".[2]
In the 1992-1993 school year, Hermione asked Binns about the legend of the Chamber of Secrets. He told her that he was not interested in talking about legends because he taught facts, and no such thing was ever found. Hermione begged him to tell the story, and he gave in and told everyone about the founding of the school and how the legend was invented.[2]
Prisoner of Azkaban[]
Binns set third-years rolls of parchment for homework in summer 1993. Hermione ended up doing two rolls over what he asked for.[3] Professor Lupin used Professor Binns's classroom that school year to teach Harry Potter how to fight Dementors.[4]
