The Dark Mark above Hogwarts Castle

The Dark Mark is the symbol of Voldemort and the Death Eaters which is cast into the sky whenever they have killed. It first appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

About[]

The Dark Mark is typically produced over the recent scene of murder(s) by Death Eaters. It is very unlikely that a non-Death Eater could cast it because only Death Eaters are taught how.[1]

History[]

During a reunion after the 422nd Quidditch World Cup final, Death Eaters attacked the campsites. Those involved were unaware that another Death Eater, Barty Crouch Jnr., was also there on Voldemort's orders. Crouch Jnr. discovered Harry Potter's wand on the ground and cast the Dark Mark into the sky over the campsites, which scared the other Death Eaters who did not expect it. After having lied at the end of the First Wizarding War that were not true supporters of Voldemort to avoid Azkaban, they were afraid that they would be punished if he had returned. They fled the scene.[1]

Crouch Jnr. was witnessed doing this by Harry, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger but they did not know who he was. Crouch Jnr. left the scene shortly after and dropped the wand on the floor, which was picked up by a house-elf, Winky. British Ministry of Magic officials led by Barty Crouch Snr. Apparated to the scene of the Dark Mark cast to try and apprehend the culprit. Confused to discover Harry, Ron, Hermione and Winky there, they accused them each of producing the Dark Mark but realised that was very unlikely. The investigation concluded without the culprit being caught. This was the first time in thirteen years, when the First Wizarding War ended, that the Dark Mark had been cast.[1]. A twinkling black-and-white photograph of it was published in the Daily Prophet the next day.[2]
