Biography[]
Early life[]
Dean was the only child of a wizard father and a Muggle mother but he thought he was Muggle-born growing up. Dean's father went missing before he was able to tell his mother that he was a wizard. He was killed at the height of the First Wizarding War by Death Eaters when he refused to join them. Dean thought that he had walked out on the family.[2]
Dean's mother later married and had a few other children, and he had "a very happy, home life". He was a supporter of West Ham FC.[3] He is the only wizard in the family. He found out when he was eleven that he was in fact a wizard but thought he had to be a Muggle-born. Dean's mother then started to realise that Dean's father was probably a wizard, but she was never able to find any proof.[2]
Philosopher's Stone[]
Dean befriended Seamus Finnigan at the Start-of-Term Feast and they shared a dorimitory with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom. In the lead-up to their first Flying lesson, Dean talked about how great football is. He and Ron had an argument because Ron could not understand what was exciting about football if they do not fly.[3]
Chamber of Secrets[]
At the start of his second year, Dean was very impressed with Harry and Rom after they flew to Hogwarts in a flying car. He told Harry he thought it was cool.[4] During their first Defence Against the Dark Arts, Dean and Seamus were silently laughing at Professor Lockhart after he gave a pop quiz about himself. They stopped laughing when he teased the unveiling of a dangerous creature, but they were worried after it turned out to be cornish pixies.[5]
After the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, Dean was in a History of Magic lesson where the boredom put him in a trance. He snapped out of it when Hermione Granger asked the professor about the legend. When the professor stated there was no way it was real because Professor Dumbledore would have found it by now, Dean pointed out that it was possible that only someone related to Salazar Slytherin could find it. However, it was quickly shut down because the professor thought it was ridiculous to even consider that it is real.[6]
In December, he and Seamus were spotted looking very excited when they learned there would be a Duelling Club set up.[7] During the Easter holidays, Dean chose his new classes for his third year by closing his eyes and picking the classes he poked his wand on. When someone broke into his dormitory by someone trying to steal Tom Riddle's Diary off Harry, he swore at the mess he found when he walked in.[8]
After Hermione was Petrified, he had to help Harry stop Ron from fighting Draco after he had stated it was a pity she didn't die. Dean was also very unhappy with Professor Lockhart when he kept saying the right culprit, Rubeus Hagrid had been found for opening the Chamber of Secrets. When he first shouted out at Lockhart, he doubled down by telling Dean that those in charge wouldn't have arrested the wrong person. With Ron, he told Lockhart that they absolutely would.[9]
Prisoner of Azkaban[]
During the summer holidays, Harry saw Dean and Seamus at Quality Quidditch Supplies.[10] In September, he attended his first Divination lesson. When Professor Trelawney screamed after she looked into Harry's teacup, he asked her what she saw to which the replied the Grim. He shrugged with Harry because they didn't understand the significance of it. After their first Care of Magical Creatures lesson, he was upset at Draco. He pointed out it was his own fault he was attacked by Buckbeak.[11]
During his first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson with Professor Lupin, he shouted out "cool" when he showed them the spell Waddiwasi. When he faced the Boggartl it took the form of a severed hand which slithered along the floor toward him. With the spell Riddikulus, he trapped it with a mousetrap.[1]
In October, he and Seamus asked Parvati Patil what was wrong with Lavender Brown when she was crying over the death of her pet rabbit.[12] Upon hearing Harry didn't get his permission slip signed for Hogsmeade visits, he offered to forge Vernon Dursley's signature because he was good at it. He declined because he already told Professor McGonagall he wasn't signed.[13]
After Sirius Black broke into Hogwarts Castle, everyone was confused about how he did it. Dean proposed that Sirius flew in. In a Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, he told Professor Snape who was taking over for an absent Lupin, that Lupin was the best teacher in the class they've ever had. Snape replied that he is easily impressed.[13]
After Sirius Black broke into the common room for the second time, Dean was awoken by Ron screaming. He switched on the lamp in their dormitory to find out what was happening.[14] At the end of his third year upon hearing the news of Lupin's resignation, Dean hoped they would get a vampire to replace him.[15]
