After the disappearance of Voldemort and the end of the First Wizarding War, several Death Eaters that were captured lied to the British Ministry of Magic about the true extent of their involvement to avoid Azkaban. There were many who claimed they were under the Imperius Curse and told lies about Voldemort.[2]
Goblet of Fire[]
A group of people who used to be Death Eaters launched an attack on campsites after the 422nd Quidditch World Cup. A few of them launched a particularly harsh attack on Muggle Mr Roberts and his family, laughing and cheering while they contorted their bodies in the air and humiliated them. However, the Death Eaters fled after Barty Crouch Jnr. cast the Dark Mark into the sky. They feared that if Voldemort had returned, they would be punished for avoiding Azkaban by denying that they ever truly supported him.[2]
