The Diricawl is a wizarding bird in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It is a plump, flightless that could teleport, similar to Apparition. In the Muggle world, it is called the "dodo" and is thought to be extinct.

About[]

The plump and flightless bird has fluffy feathers and is known for escaping danger by teleporting in a puff of feathers from one location to another.[1]

History[]

In the fourteenth century, the Chief of the Wizards' Council gave every species with two legs the being status and asked such creatures to attend a meeting to discuss wizarding laws. Diricawls showed up because they are two-legged. However, the Chief realised that many of these animals were not intelligent enough to speak or understand anything, including the Diricawls who spent the meeting squawking so nobody could hear each other.[2]

The bird is known in the Muggle world but has another name, the Dodo. Up until the seventeenth century, they hunted the bird. Realising the danger they posed, the Diricrawl began disappearing at will if they were around someone. They thought the bird had gone extinct but the International Confederation of Wizards hid the truth because it had taught them the consequences of killing animals.[1]
