"Broaden your minds, my dears, and allow your eyes to see past the mundane!""
— Professor Trelawney

Divination is an elective subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It first appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Divination is chosen for study in the third year until at least the fifth year. The student study the art of divining to gain insights into the future in various ways, including palmistry and crystal-gazing.

About[]

Divination is taught in a classroom at the top of the North Tower. To enter, students have to go through a trapdoor in the ceiling.[1] Divination is an elective chosen in the second year to begin studying in the third year.[3]

It is a very difficult subject to learn without the advantage of having the Inner Eye.[1] Clearing your Inner Eye so that you can See by relaxing the conscious mind and physical eyes is the key to getting into your superconscious.[4] Books only help students get so far because they can't help with looking into the veiled world.[1]

History[]

Sybill Trelawney was a Professor of Divination for many years. At the start of every first third year class, she predicted a student's death because it was her favourite way of greeting new students. Hermione Granger was very unconvinced by divination, responding very negatively during her lessons. Trelawney thought she had little aura and perception.[1] They eventually argued with each other, causing her to walk out of her lesson. She dropped divination for good before her fourth year.[5]
