Early life[]

Malfoyfamily

Draco, Lucius and Narcissa

Draco was the only child of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy and was raised at Malfoy Manor. Lucius and Narcissa both came from an ancient wizarding family who each craved power and supported the notion of blood superiority.

He was born at the end of the First Wizarding War, and Draco had many family members loyal to Voldemort and the Death Eaters including an aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange and Lucius. When Voldemort was defeated for the first time, Lucius untruthfully claimed he was acting under the Imperius Curse and was not sent to Azkaban.

Philosopher's Stone[]

In the summer of 1991, Draco was at Madam Malkin's Robe Shop when he spoke to Harry Potter, not knowing who he was at the time. Draco wondered whether Harry was starting Hogwarts too and asked whether he was from a wizarding family. He was very happy to hear that he was and told him that he thought they should not let Muggle-borns attend. Draco told him he wanted to be in Slytherin, and he'd leave if he was in Hufflepuff.

Harry hardly had to say anything, because Draco was very chatty. When Rubeus Hagrid brought an ice-cream for Harry and smiled at them through the window, Draco told Hagrid was a lunatic. Harry thought Draco was very similar to Dudley Dursley.[2]

In September, Draco started Hogwarts and heard about Harry being on the train. He found the compartment he was in, hoping they could be friends. However, he saw Ronald Weasley, whose family he had a very low opinion of. He tried to persuade Harry that he needed to befriend the right sort of people, and extended an offer of friendship. However, Harry told him that he could find the right sort on his own and declined Draco's offer.[3]

The group nearly had a fight, and Draco joked about whether they actually had the courage to fight him, Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe. Harry told him they will if they don't leave. Draco saw their food and wanted to take it and eat it, but Ron's pet attacked Goyle and they run away. He was sorted into Slytherin before the Sorting Hat was even placed on him.[1]

Draco catching the Remembrall

Draco in Flying

Draco loved bullying other students. In Flying, he laughed at Neville Longbottom when he fell off a broomstick, and stole a Remembrall. Harry demanded he give it back, but Draco flew up into the sky and threw it. Harry chased it and caught it. Professor McGonagall saw and took Harry away, so Draco was happy because he thought Harry was going to get expelled.

When he found out that Harry was staying, he challenged him to a wizard's duel. Ron was supposed to be Harry's second and Draco chose Crabbe. He actually had no intention of duelling Harry and he took the opportunity to get them in trouble. He told them to meet him at midnight in the trophy room, and then told Filch to go in order to caught them that evening out of bed.[4]

Draco's plan failed, and he found Harry and Ron eating in the Great Hall. When he saw Harry was given a broomstick, he pointed out that first-year students can't bring their own one to school, and told Professor Flitwick. He expected Harry to get told off, but Flitwick cheerfully told Draco that he knew because Professor McGonagall granted Harry a special exception. Harry then thanked Draco for setting it up to which Draco looked angry and confused.[5]

When Gryffindor defeated Slytherin in the Quidditch game[6], Draco became very annoying and kept trying to upset Harry, but everyone was very impressed by Harry did. He started laughing at Harry for being an orphan who had no-one to go home to for the holidays, and laughed at Ron for helping Hagrid.[7]

In the new year, Draco decided to try out the Leg-Locker Curse on Neville. At the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff Quidditch game, he started taking fun of the Weasley family for being poor, Harry having no family and Neville for being pathetic. Neville told him he was "worth ten" of Draco, but Draco howled in laughter. He, Crabbe and Goyle then fought Ron and Neville until Harry caught the Golden Snitch.[8]

DracofindingNorbert

Draco watching Norbert hatch

In March, Draco overheard Harry, Ron and Hermione speaking about a dragon egg hatching in Hagrid's Hut. He went down and watched them through the window before Hagrid noticed him. Draco run away and kept the secret for ages, but he kept smiling at Harry. Harry knew that Draco was going to eventually tell on them, and they planned to send Norbert to safety before then, but when Ron ended up in the Hospital Wing, Draco was suspicious and went to speak to him.[9]

Draco pretended he wanted to borrow a book, and Ron had to give him one. However, he gave him the book that had Charlie Weasley's letter in it detailing their arrangements for Norbert to be collected at the Astronomy Tower. Draco snuck out at night and told Professor McGonagall. They waited until midnight to try and catch Harry and Hermione Granger taking Norbert, but they hid under the Cloak of Invisibility and McGonagall decided Draco was lying and gave him detention.[9]

However, they did get caught empty-handed by Filch. Neville had heard Draco speaking about what he was going to do and snuck out to warn Harry and Hermione. The four of them were given detention together. The detentin was served helping Hagrid in Forbidden Forest, searching for a missing unicorn. Draco complained about it but Hagrid pointed out he could be expelled unless he did what he was told.[10]

Draco and Neville had to search together on their own, but Draco started scaring Neville which caused him send sparks up in the sky for help. Hagrid then put Draco and Harry together. They found the missing unicorn, but it's blood was being drunk by a cloaked figure and Harry later found out that it was probably Voldemort. Draco ran away in fear, and went to find Hagrid.[10]

At the End-of-Year Feast, Draco thought Slytherin had won the Inter-House Quidditch Cup and was shocked when Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville gained House points which led Gryffindor to victory. Harry saw him banging a goblet on the table in anger. He later pointed Draco out to Ron because he looked completely frozen from the shock.[11]

Chamber of Secrets[]

In August 1992, Draco and Lucius went to Borgin and Burkes to sell Dark artefacts that Lucius had collected. They were worried that Arthur Weasley was going to conduct a raid at their house. Harry was in the shop and heard Draco whinging about Harry having a racing broom. Lucius told him was going to purchase one for him that day. Draco wanted to buy the Hand of Glory, but Lucius told him the product was for thieves and he needed better school grades.[12]

They then went to Flourish and Blotts where Draco saw Gilderoy Lockhart fawning over Harry. He insulted Harry and Ron, and Ginevra Weasley defended them. He upset Ginny and Hermione until Ron snapped and went to punch Draco. Harry and Hermione had to hold him back. Arthur and Lucius noticed and started arguing, and Draco watched them fight in the shop until Hagrid stopped it.[12]

In September, Draco saw Harry being asked for a signed photo by a fan and started teasing him. Colin defended Harry by saying that Draco was jealous. He found that absurd and asked how anyone could be jealous of such an ugly scar. However, Professor Lockhart saw what was happening and wanted to take a joint photo for Colin so Draco gave up.[13]

Lucius purchased seven sets of Nimbus 2001s and gave them to Draco and Marcus Flint, the Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team in order to bribe him into letting Draco be Seeker. Flint accepted the offer and took Draco to the pitch to train him. Draco and the team gloated to Oliver Wood, Harry and their team which caused Hermione to say Draco had bought a place in the team rather than get in for talent.[14]

Draco then called Hermione a "Mudblood" and upset her friends, including Fred and George Weasley who jumped at him. Flint body-blocked Draco to protect him. Ron attempted to curse Draco using the Slug-vomiting Charm but because he had a broken wand, it bounced back and hit Ron. Draco was howling in laughter, when he was watching Ron throw up slugs.[14]

In October, Draco saw Harry near a Petrified Mrs Norris and a warning that "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware". He was grinning when he saw the cat and shouted that the "Mudbloods" will be Petrified. Harry, Ron and Hermione suspected that Draco was the Heir of Slytherin and hatched a plan to prove it by speaking to Draco through Polyjuice Potion.[15]

During the first Quidditch game of the year, Draco kept calling Harry "scarhead". He saw Harry being chased by a rogue Bludger and asked him if he was training for the ballet. He was that busy laughing at Harry that he failed to notice the Golden Snitch flying by him and when Harry lunged forward to get it, Draco thought Harry was going to punch him. Harry caught the Golden Snitch and won, and Flint shouted at Draco for failing.[16]

Draco attended a Duelling Club by Professor Lockhart. Snape put Harry and Draco together to try duelling, so he and Harry used spells to try and hurt each other. Draco used the first spell, and Harry fought back using the Tickling Charm. Draco was laughing uncontrollably and used Tarantallegra to force Harry to dance. Professor Snape broke up the duel and then chose Harry and Draco to duel in front of the whole club. Draco used "Serpensortia" and unleashed a snake in the Hall. Harry shocked Draco and the whole school when he spoke Parseltongue to the snake.[17]

In December, Draco stayed home for the holidays. Harry and Ron impersonated Crabbe and Goyle through Polyjuice Potion to find out if he was the Heir of Slytherin. They found he wasn't, but he did tell them new facts about it. Draco didn't know Lucius was behind it, but he did warn Draco not get involved. He hoped whoever opened it would be successful. He thought it was very funny that Lucius had given an interview about Arthur. They thought he should be sacked,n and the Muggle Protection Act should be scrapped. Harry and Ron had to force a laugh.[18]

In February, Draco heard a dwarf sing a Valentine's Day song to Harry and thought it was funny. Harry's bag was dropped during it and Draco noticed Tom Riddle's Diary was in it. He picked it up thinking it was Harry's Diary and wanted to look in it but Harry demanded he give it back. He used the Disarming Charm to get it and Draco looked furious, shouting at Ginny that Harry wasn't very impressed by her valentine.[19]

In April, Draco was glad Dumbledore was suspended and proud that Lucius was responsible. He hoped the new Headteacher wouldkeep the Chamber of Secrets open and thought Professor Snape should be the Headteacher. He bet the next victim would be killed, and added it was shame it couldn't be Granger since she had been Petrified.[20]

In May, Harry found the Chamber of Secrets and closed it. Draco stopped strutting about the school gloating about the dangers of the Basilisk and looked bitter and sulky.[21]
