The Draught of Living Death is a very powerful sleeping potion that puts the drinker into a death-like slumber. It is very difficult to brew. It is taught to sixth years studying Potions. It appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
About[]
The potion is created by adding the powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood.[2] At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it is taught to sixth year students taking Potions for their Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests. The recipe is in Advanced Potion Making. It should be a shade of lilac when the creator is half-way through making the potion. It is a complex potion.[1]
History[]
In September 1991, Professor Snape asked Harry Potter what potion he would make if he added the root of asphodel to the infusion of wormwood. Harry was only a first year student who couldn't have known the answer. However, Hermione Granger put her hand up because she appeared to have read about it.[2]
Horace Slughorn, who taught for Potions for fifty years, told his sixth year students, including Harry, that he had only ever known one student get close to making it in their hour long lesson. Using a copy of Advanced Potion Making which had notes written inside it, Harry also nearly made it within the hour.[1]
