The dungeons are a location in Hogwarts Castle. They first appear in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
It is colder in the dungeons than any other place in the school. It houses the Slytherin common room. It is also the location of the Potions classroom which is the end of the descending stairs accessed through a door in the Entrance Hall.[1] Each dungeon had a number.[2]
History[]

Hagrid and Tom arguing about Aragog
When he was a third year, Rubeus Hagrid kept an Acromantula, Aragog in a dungeon. Tom Riddle waited in the Dungeons until he saw Hagrid and then followed him to Aragog's dungeon. He wanted to turn Hagrid in because he was framing him and Aragog for killing a student to cover up opening the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid told him that he was innocent, but Tom used a spell to open the door to the dungeon. Aragog eventually escaped and Hagrid was turned in anyway and expelled.[3]
When Harry Potter was in his first year, Professor Quirrell run into thr Great Hall screaming that a troll was in the dungeons. However, it was a white lie because he actually let it loose in another part of the school.[4]
The following school year, third years accidentally put frog brains across the ceiling of dungeon five. In October, Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington had a Deathday Party in one of the roomier Dungeons.[2] In December, Percy Weasley patrolled the Dungeons searching for anything related to the Heir of Slytherin and the Serpent of Slytherin.[5]
