The Elixir of Life is a potion in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is produced using the Philosopher's Stone. The drinker has to take it regularly to keep increasing their lifespan. If the supply runs out or they can't produce anymore, they will die.
About[]
The Elixir of Life is created using the Philosopher's Stone. It cannot produce true immortality but it will increase the lifespan of the drinker. The creator, Nicolas Flamel and his wife Perenelle lived for seven centuries. It's unknown how much time one batch of the potion provides, but if they stop producing the potion or drinking it, the effect will eventually wear off and they will die.[1] The potion is also used to build a new body. Voldemort sought the potion to do so when he was living a bodiless half-life.[1]
History[]
In around the fourteenth century, Nicolas Flamel invented the Philosopher's Stone with which he could produce the Elixir of Life. He produced the Elixir of Life for seven centuries which he drunk with Perenelle Flamel.[2]
In 1991, Albus Dumbledore knew that Voldemort was going to try and steal the Philosopher's Stone to produce the Elixir of Life and create a new body. Nicolas gave him the Stone for safe-keeping.[3][1] In June 1992, Harry Potter was successful in thwarting Voldemort. Nicolas and Perenelle then gave permission for the Stone to be destroyed, but produced enough of the potion to give themselves enough time to get their affairs together. They passed away within the next four years.[1][4]
Trivia[]
- It is unknown whether the potion delays the ageing process or whether the drinker stays youthful looking.
