Fawkes was a phoenix who served Albus Dumbledore, and he was a loyal companion for at least half a century.

Biography

Early life

Companion to Dumbledore

Fawkes lived in the Headteacher's office at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He had a golden perch behind the door.[3]

In December 1992, Fawkes was dying when Harry Potter went to the office. Dumbledore then showed up and joked that it was taking too long. They saw the frail bird die, and he was worried he would be held responsible. However, Dumbledore told him he was fine and told Harry how loyal Fawkes was. Eventually, he was reborn again.[3]

In May 1993, Fawkes could feel how loyal Harry was to Dumbledore and knew he was in the Chamber of Secrets.[4] He brought the Sorting Hat to Harry and helped fight Tom Riddle and a Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets. Harry could hear Fawkes singing when he was getting closer and closer. He dropped the Hat for Harry and found a perch. Tom laughed loudly at the thought that Dumbledore thought it would be useful to Harry. He was wrong because in seconds of unleashing a Basilisk to kill Harry, Fawkes distracted it by soaring round and eventually clawed the Basilisk's eyes out.[5]

It gave Harry time to get the Sword of Gryffindor and slay the Basilisk, but in the process he was stabbed by a Basilisk fang. The venom would have killed Harry in less than a minute and Fawkes began crying. Tom thought he was grieving but instead he used the tears to heal Harry. Tom used Harry's wand to force Fawkes to leave, but he collected Tom Riddle's Diary and dropped it in Harry's lap, enabling him to destroy it using the Basilisk fang.[5]

Fawkes was strong enough to carry Harry, Ronald Weasley, Ginny Weasley and Professor Lockhart back to the school. He then led the four to Professor McGonagall's office where Dumbledore was.[4]

Later life

Appearance

Fawkes was usually very handsome, and had a wonderful red and gold plumage. However, when he was dying he looked like a half-plucked turkey, and when he was reborn, he was very wrinkled.[3]
