Harry Potter Books Wiki

The first year is a year of education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for students aged eleven to twelve. They are sorted into their House at the Start-of-Term Feast and study seven subjects for which they take exams in June. They also learn Flying for a short period of time.

About[]

Students who are accepted to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are sent an acceptance letter on their 11th birthday. Those who have grown up in the wizarding world are sent a letter by owl because it is presumed they know what it is. Muggle-born students have a teacher visit them with their letter so they can explain the wizarding world to them.[1]

On 1 September, they wear plain robes and the Keeper of Keys and Grounds take them from Hogsmeade Station over the lake to the front gates of Hogwarts Castle.[2] The Keeper of the Keys leave them with the Deputy Head. They wait in the Empty chamber off of the Entrance Hall for everyone to be seated in the Great Hall. They then put on the Sorting Hat in front of everyone to get put in one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Later on, they are led to their common room by a prefect and start attending lessons the next day.[3]

First-years are not given permission to bring their own broomstick to school.[1]
