Fluffy is a character in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He is a three-headed dog that belongs to Rubeus Hagrid. Hagrid loans Fluffy to Albus Dumbledore to protect the Philosopher's Stone.
Biography[]
Fluffy was purchased by Rubeus Hagrid from a Greek chap in a pub, prior to September 1991. Dumbledore wanted to hide the Philosopher's Stone from any would-be thief, suspecting Voldemort of attempting to procure it. Hagrid loaned Fluffy to Dumbledore for the purpose of guarding it.[1]
Fluffy was kept in a section of the third-floor corridor, guarding a trapdoor that led to the underground chambers. The door to that section of the corridor could only be opened using advanced charms, e.g. the Unlocking Charm. In September, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom were running away from Argus Filch when they hid in the corridor. They were shocked to find a vicious-looking dog growling at them, and run out of the room immediately. Harry, Ron and Hermione spent ages wondering what Fluffy was guarding.[2]
Later, Professor Quirrell hatched a plan to get past Fluffy and let a troll into the school. He was trying to sneak away to the third-floor corridor when no-one was looking but Professor Snape saw him and suspected he was heading towards Fluffy. Snape intercepted him and Quirrell gave up, but in the process, Snape was bitten on the leg by the dog.[1]
In April 1992, Hagrid was manipulated and told Quirrell and Voldemort that the dog could only be put to sleep by playing the flute. Then in June, Quirrell and Voldemort enchanted a flute to play a song and once Fluffy was sleeping, they went through the trapdoor. Before the enchanted flute stopped playing the tune, Harry, Ron and Hermione went through the door because they had deduced that the Philosopher's Stone was going to be stolen that evening.[3]
Fluffy had fulfilled the purpose he was needed when the school year was over, and Hagrid let him be free in the Forbidden Forest. Dumbledore was not very happy about that and sent Fluffy to Greece.[4]
