Flying is a subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It only appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. First year students have to take it in order to learn how to fly on a broomstick. Professor Hooch was the teacher during Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts.

About[]

Every first year student has to take the subject for a short time at the start of their education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They learn the basics of flying on a broomstick. It is a very exciting subject for the first year students.

Because they do not given permission to bring their own broomstick, the school provides broomsticks. They are old and have twigs sticking out at odd angles. The broomsticks' performances are not very good. A few don't work properly and vibrate if they fly too high or slightly to the left.[1]

History[]

During the first flying lesson Harry Potter had, a few of the other student boasted about the flying they had done growing up. The students who hadn't flown were worried about it. Ron Weasley boasted about a time he nearly hit a hang-glider using Charlie Weasley's broomstick whhole Draco Malfoy had a lot of far-fetched stories to tell. During the lesson, Harry was a huge success. Hermione Granger's broom rolled over instead of going up at her command while Neville Longbottom's did nothing. Draco Malfoy was told he was holding the broom wrong even though he had boasted he was an expert at flying. When he was on the broom, Neville flew too high and fell off. He had a broken arm and had to be taken to the Hospital Wing. Hooch told the other students not go fly on their brooms when she was taking him, but Draco took Neville's Remembrall and chucked it in the sky. Harry chased after it and caught it and was given the role of Seeker on the House Quidditch team.[1]

Curriculum[]

  • In the first lesson, students learn how to command a broom by saying "up" and catching it in their right hand. They also learn how to get on the broom. Finally, they kick up from the ground and levitate on the broom for a few seconds.[1]
