The Fwooper is a wizarding bird in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. They have brightly coloured feathers and sing a high-pitched twittering song which will drive a person insane unless they are stopped with a Silencing Charm.

About[]

Fwoopers have very vivid plumages with their bright coloured feathers in orange, pink, yellow or lime. They lay patterned eggs and their feathers are used to make fancy quills. They sing a high-pitched twittering song which can be enjoyed at first but will eventually drive those listening insane. Witches and wizards need a licence to own a pet Fwooper. They have to be sold with a Silencing Charm on it and the owner has to keep putting it on once a month.[1]

History[]

Uric the Oddball once thought the Fwooper's singing was actually of benefit to witches and wizards and attempted to persuade the Wizards' Council that it was true. Uric listened to them singing for three months and then showed up at the Council to prove it. However, he arrived visibly insane wearing nothing but a hat which they later found out was a dead badger.[1]

When the Wizards' Council tried to classify creatures into a beast or being under Burdock Muldoon, Fwoopers fell under his definition of a being because he considered them to be creatures who walk on two legs. However, when Muldoon called every being to a meeting, the Fwoopers and other creatures were not intelligent enough to understand wizarding laws. They spent the meeting singing so that nobody could hear each other speak.[2]
