Gadding with Ghouls is a book written by Gilderoy Lockhart. It appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Lockhart was a fraud who claimed the book was about his true encounters with ghouls. However, he had stolen the story from another witch or wizard and used a spell to erase their memory of it. The book talks about slow-acting venoms. He details how he trapped the ghoul in a tea-strainer.[1] He thought it was "possibly my very favourite" book.[2]
In 1992, Lockhart started teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He asked every student regardless of their year to buy and bring a copy for their lessons. It was sold at Flourish and Blotts. Lockhart gave Harry Potter a copy of the book along with his collection of work for free at a book signing. Harry gave it to Ginny Weasley.[3]
In order to trick Lockhart into signing a permission slip for her to enter the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts library, Hermione Granger flattered him by talking about Gadding with Ghouls and how she was inspired to research what Lockhart wrote about.[2]
