A Ghoul is a creature in the Harry Potter book series and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. They look like an ugly, buck-toothed ogre.

About[]

A ghoul is a very ugly, slimy, buck-toothed, simple-minded creature which feeds on spiders. They live in attics and barns that belong to witches and wizards.[1] They are not dangerous and tend to only growl if anyone stumbles across it. They howl and knock on the pipes of the house if it is too quiet.[2] Even though they appear to be a nuisance, a lot of wizarding household adopt the ghoul and consider it a pet.[1]

History[]

In the Old World, a crook called Phineas Fletcher captured a Demiguise and boarded a ship to illegally import it to the Old World. A ghoul stowed onboard and bred with the Demiguise when it escaped. The resulting offspring is called a Hidebehind.[3]

The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures have a Ghoul Task Force. They will get rid of ghouls from households and buildings that belong to Muggles. However witches and wizards often adopt ghouls like they are pets in the wizarding world, letting it stay in their house.[1] The Weasley family had such a ghoul at The Burrow.[2]

Gilderoy Lockhart published a book about a time when he fought ghouls and trapped one using a tea-strainer. Lockhart was later revealed to be a fraud, so it is possible he stole the story off another witch or wizard and erased their memory of it.[4]
