The gnome is a beast known to infest the gardens of wizarding households. They are thrown from the gardens using a process called de-gnoming.

About[]

The gnome is a short creature that grows up to just one foot and they have huge heads that are not proportional to their body.[1], They are knobbly and bald[3], with tough, bony[1] and horny feet, and are potato and leathery-looking.[3]

They live in burrows underground called gnomeholes.[3] Gnomes eat the roots of plants[source?] and are the only creatures that will eat Horklumps.[1] They are the favourite prey of Jarveys[4] and are also eaten by Crups.[5]

They are considered pests in the wizarding world because they infest gardens.[3] In order to get rid of them, the garden has to undergo a de-gnoming. They can speak but they aren't very bright - when a de-gnoming is happening, they will poke their heads up out of their burrows to have a look and give away their location. They will eventually get up and walk away.[3] Jarveys prey on gnomes and the attacks are very brutal, hence why many witches and wizards do not choose to use Jarveys for de-gnoming.[1]

History[]

The Burrow often had gnome infestations and the Weasley family often had to undertake a de-gnoming process. Harry Potter helped them one summer.[3] A couple of years later, Hermione Granger stayed at the Burrow and brought her cat, Crookshanks, who liked chasing the gnomes around the garden. One evening, the gnomes were sprinting through the rose-bushes while Crookshanks chased them very closely.[6]
