Harry Potter Books Wiki

Hallowe'en is a holiday that first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It is celebrated every year on the 31st October.

In both the Muggle and wizarding worlds, people celebrate by decorating, going trick-and-treating, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, apple bobbing and telling scary stories. Witches and wizards enchant these items for fun. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has a Hallowe'en Feast every year.[1] The first Hogsmeade weekend of the school year is usually on this date or around the same time.[2]

History[]

In 1492, Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington was killed on this date in a botched beheading.[3]

In 1981, James and Lily Potter were killed[4] by Voldemort who disappeared after he failed to kill Harry Potter.[5] He was presumed dead when he was hit by his own Killing Curse.[6]

In 1991, a troll was let loose in Hogwarts during their feast.[1] In 1992, Nicholas had a Deathday Party and Ginny Weasley opened the Chamber of Secrets, which led to Mrs Norris getting Petrified.[7]

In 1993, Sirius Black slashed the Fat Lady's painting when she wouldn't let him into the Gryffindor commonnroom.[2] In 1994, the four champions of the Triwizard Tournament were chosen.[8]
