Harry Potter is a series of seven novels written by J. K. Rowling. They chronicle the life of a young wizard, Harry Potter, a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is forced to confront his enemy, the Dark wizard Voldemort to prevent him from gaining immortality and controlling the wizarding world.

The first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997. The series ended with the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007 which sold over twelve millions copies in the United States. The original seven books were published by Bloomsbury and Scholastic. They are very popular and have achieved profound success worldwide. They have gained critical acclaim and worldwide commerical success, launching one of the highest-grossing film series ever, a spin-off, the digital platform Wizarding World and a theme park. They are the best-selling book series in history, selling millions of copies and being translated into eighty languages.

Rowling has since written three companions novels; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. New editions have been published several times which include illustrations by artists, different covers and new and unknown details.
