The Head Boy and Head Girl are two[1] students in their final year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry chosen by the Head of Hogwarts and their Head of House to take on certain duties.
About[]
The students are chosen at the start of their seventh year for being academic and responsible. They do not need to be a Prefect, for example Remus Lupin was the Gryffindor prefect[2], and yet James Potter was Head Boy.[3] They are sent a letter in the summer before their final year telling them of their appointment and they receive a badge.[4]
They patrol corridors and keep students in line, and have the power to award and take House points for bad behaviour.[5] If needed, they have to take on special roles in times of danger. For example, they were told to keep an eye on Dementors guarding the school[6], and watch students when they were sleeping in the Great Hall while the staff searched for Sirius Black.[1] They lead the prefects, telling them in the prefect carriage on the train when they will need to patrol the corridors.[5]
A shield that has the name of every Head Boy and Head Girl was kept in the trophy room.[7]
