Harry Potter Books Wiki

The office is a room in Hogwarts Castle belonging to the Head of Hogwarts at the time. It first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

About[]

The office is on the second-floor[1] of Hogwarts Castle. The entrance is a statue of a stone gargoyle that grants entry if it is given the correct password. The gargoyle slides to the side and the wall splits into two. Behind it is a spiral, stone staircase which works like an escalator which ends at an oak door with a brass knocker in the shape of a griffon.[2]

The office is large and has spindle-legged tables. Professor Dumbledore has silver instruments whirring. The walls have portraits of every single Head in the history of the school, who speak and give advice to the current Head. The desk is huge and claw-footed and has a shelf behind it holding the Sorting Hat.[3]

History[]

In June 1943, Tom Riddle spoke to Professor Dippet in the office because he had sent a letter to Dippet asking for permission to stay at Hogwarts School during the summer. Dippet thought it was no longer safe enough because of the Chamber of Secrets opening and declined. He told Tom he was probably going to have to close the school down unless the culprit was found, forcing Tom to frame Rubeus Hagrid.[4]

In December 1992, Harry Potter was taken to the office for the first time to speak to Professor Dumbledore. He spoke to the Sorting Hat who told Harry that he could have done good in Slytherin. He then noticed Fawkes on a golden perch behind the door. Fawkes was then reborn but Harry thought he was going to be held responsible for killing it. Rubeus Hagrid showed up to argue Harry's innocence in the second opening of the Chamber of Secrets but Dumbledore had known he was innocent. Dumbledore asked Harry if there was anything he wanted to tell him, but Harry wouldn't say.[3]
