The Head of House is a Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who is responsible for the students one of the four houses. They appeared throughout the Harry Potter book series.
About[]
It is unknown how a Professor is chosen to be a Head of House. They are presumably chosen by the Head of Hogwarts. They are responsible for the welfare, discipline and safety of their students. They are able to supersede the decision of another Professor or Head of House if the student is in their house.[1] They have to live near their house common room in case of an emergency. If another Head of House catches a student breaking a rule that goes above taking House points and giving a detention, they will speak to that student's Head of House.
They collect permission slips of their house's students for Hogsmeade in the third year. They provide career advice to students in their fifth year, giving out appointments and looking at their grades to suggest subjects they should be focused on in their O.W.L.s. In the sixth year, they check their grades to find out if they have achieved a high enough grade to continue studying their preferred classes at N.E.W.T. level.
History[]
During Harry Potter's second year, the Head of Houses had to tell their students that the school was being closed down when Ginny was taken into the Chamber of Secrets.[2] However, it stayed opened when Harry found it and killed the Basilisk that evening.[3]
