A Hodag is a wizarding beast in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

About[]

A Hodag is the size of a large dog with horns, red glowing eyes and long fangs. Their magic is largely stored in their horns. If they are powdered, they can make a person both immune to the effects of alcohol and stay awake for seven days and nights. They eat Mooncalves which is why they are attracted to Muggle farms in the night.[1]

History[]

Hodags originated in North America. They are now confined to a protected area in Wisconsin by the Magical Congress of the United States of America although rare escapes have occurred. This is to prevent Muggle sightings of Hodags which happens when they are prowling Muggle farms. The Department of No-Maj Misinformation has successfully worked hard to persuade Muggles that the Hodag is a hoax.[1]

In the first edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Hodag is not included after Newton Scamander promised President Seraphina Picquery that he would not include North American creatures. In the 2017 edition, the Hodag was finally added.[2]
