The kitchens are a room in the basement level of Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter book series. House-elves prepare and cook food for the students and staff here.
About[]
The kitchens are entered through a painting of a pear in a corridor outside. The pear has to be tickled in order for it to open. It was located in the basement right under the Great Hall. The school has house-elves to prepare and cook the food. They aren't given wages except for Dobby who was given one galleon per week.[1] There is a suit of armour near the kitchens.[2]
The room is huge and has a high ceiling. It has pots and pans heaped around the stone wall, on counter-tops and stoves. There are five tables identical to the ones in the Great Hall above in the same exact place. The tables are linked to the ones above and when the house-elves put food on these tables, it transports to the table in the Great Hall.[1]
History[]
Helga Hufflepuff invited the house-elves to Hogwarts during the 10th century to work. She wanted to create a safe place where they would not be abused. She gave the house-elves her own food recipe which they still served at the school a thousand years later.[3]
