The library is a room in Hogwarts Castle on the first-floor corridor. It has thousands of books that students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry borrow to study or they do their homework here. It first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
About[]
The library has hundreds of narrow rows, thousands of shelves with tens of thousands of books around chairs and tables.[2] The school employ a librarian who is Irma Pince during Harry Potter's time at the school. She is a staunch and strict protector of the books which she expects borrowers to keep in the best condition. Her library has to be silent and she shushes and frowns at anyone talking too loudly. According to Professor Snape, who is possibly lying to Harry, books should not be taken outside of the castle.[3] She does not let the students eat food in the library. Students have to have permission to go in the Restricted Section.[2]
History[]

Harry, Ron and Hermione in 1992
During their first year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger spent a lot of time in the library searching for books about Nicolas Flamel.[2] In around April, they told Rubeus Hagrid that they knew about the Philosopher's Stone while he was borrowing books from the library. When then looked at the section he was browsing, they figured out he was getting books about dragons.[4]
When his son was attending Hogwarts, Lucius Malfoy requested that the story of The Fountain of Fair Fortune in The Tales of Beedle the Bard be removed from the Hogwarts library. Professor Dumbledore refused which marked the beginning of their campaigns to ruin each other.[5]
In October of her first year, Ginny Weasley was possessed by Tom Riddle's Diary and opened the Chamber of Secrets before warning the enemies of the Heir should beware. Lots of students tried to borrow a copy of Hogwarts: A History to learn about the Chamber and bult a very long waiting list.[6] In April, Hermione found out through research in the library that the creature in the Chamber of Secrets was a Basilisk.[7]

Harry and Ron researching in the library
In April 1994, Harry, Ron and Hermione looked for books about Hippogriffs to find a way to appeal Buckbeak's beheading. Ron took at least two thick books to look through.[8]
Quidditch Through the Ages is a very popular library book according to Irma Pince. Albus Dumbledore once asked her if he could take one and copy it in order to publish it in the Muggle world and raise money for the charity Comic Relief. She was very surprised and had to be persuaded to let him have one.[9]

Notes and sources[]
- ↑ In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 11, Harry left the Library and went up a staircase to the Headteacher's office. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 28 determined that office was on the second floor. The Library had to be on the first floor. It's supported further by Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 8 when Harry heads toward the Library and then decided to go up a staircase to the second-floor corridor again to go to Lupin's office.
