House points

House point hourglasses

House points are awarded to students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for good work, deeds or achievements. Professors, Prefects, Head Boy and Girls have the right to award or deduct house points. The school house that gains the highest number of points at the end of the year is given the House Cup.

House points appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Overview

Starting on 1 September every year, students can gain or lose house points. Points are awarded for good work, deeds and achievements while they are deducted for wrongdoings like rule-breaking. Hourglasses with unique stones for each house are kept in the Entrance Hall which increase and decrease. Gryffindor have rubies, Slytherin have emeralds, Ravenclaw have sapphires and Hufflepuff have diamonds.

Those who have the power of awarding and deducting points are Professors, Prefects and the Head Boy and Girls. Prefects can't take points from each other. Points are also awarded for winning Quidditch matches and the Inter-House Quidditch Cup. The House with the highest number of points at the End-of-Year Feast is awarded the House Cup.
