Harry Potter Books Wiki

A Howler is a letter in the wizarding world enchanted to shout at the recipient in the very high voice of the sender. It appears throughout the Harry Potter book series.

About[]

A Howler has a red envelope. The receiver will often know what it is when they get it. The sender uses one to deliver a letter that is enchanted to shout at the receiver when they open it. If the receiver does not open it, it will increase in anger and temperature until it is smoking when it opens on its own to shout. It will fall and go into flames when it stops, leaving it in ashes.[2] The voice of the sender is increased in volume higher than average.[3]

Ron's Howler

Augusta Longbottom once sent one to Neville Longbottom.[2]

At the start of his second year at Hogwarts, Molly Weasley sent a Howler to Ronald Weasley after he took their flying car to school. He broke the International Statute of Secrecy in the process. He also got Mr Weasley in trouble at work for breaking his own law by enchanting the car. She shouted at Ron that she wouldn't have been shocked if he was expelled, asking him to consider about the impact it had. She ended with a warning to Ron that she will bring him back home if he did anything else.[2]

In February 1994, Augusta sent Neville a Howler because Sirius Black found his lost list of passwords for Gryffindor Tower. Ron told Neville to run away when he got it in the Great Hall because he had an audience. He got to the Entrance Hall but Augusta's voice was so loud, everyone could still hear it. She told Neville he had embarrassed the whole family.[3]
