Ignotus Peverell is a pure-blood[3] wizard and the younger brother of Antioch and Cadmus Peverell. They are the inspiration for The Tale of the Three Brothers in The Tales of Beedle the Bard. He is the original owner of the Cloak of Invisibility, which some say he had been given by Death itself.

Biography[]

Ignotus was born sometime in the Middle Ages. He had two older brothers, Antioch and Cadmus Peverell.[2]

The true story is uncertain but in The Tales of Beedle the Bard, the three brothers are walking when they reach a perilous river that claims the lives of those who try to cross it. They use their wands to build a bridge and start walking when Death appears because he feels cheated and pretends to congratulate the brothers. Death offers a reward for their skill designed to trick them into their demise. Ignotus was wiser than his brothers and did not trust Death, so he didn't ask for something to make him powerful or try to humilate Death further. Instead, he asked for something to enable him to go forward and not be followed by Death. Death ripped off a piece of its own cloak and gave it to Ignotus, which could render him invisible. Others believe Ignotus created the Cloak of Invisibility himself.[7]

After obtaining their rewards, Ignotus and his brothers parted ways. His brothers died very soon after their separation, having been driven to their fates by Death's gifts. Death searched for Ignotus for years but couldn't find him. Ignotus had a son and lived to ripe old age, until he decided to take off the Cloak and give it to his son. Death and Ignotus greeted each other like old friends and departed this life.[2]
