Improper Use of Magic Office is a sub-department of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the British Ministry of Magic. They investigate violations of the International Statute of Secrecy, including under-age magic. It first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Function[]
If an underage witch or wizard uses magic at home, they are sent a letter from the office immediately. For their first offence, they are informed of the law and warned that a second offence could lead expulsion from Hogwarts. They are also informed that being witnessed by a Muggle is a very serious offence under section 13 of the International Confederation of Warlocks' Statute of Secrecy.[1]
The office detectes cases of under-age magic by location, not by person. This isn't foolproof because even if they are not responsible for the magic (e.g. Harry Potter and Dobby), they will still be blamed for it.[1]
History[]
Harry Potter was sent a letter from the office, after Dobby used the Hover Charm at 4 Privet Drive in the presence of Muggles who weren't aware about the wizarding world.[1]
Molly Weasley was worried that Fred and George Weasley would end up in front of the office if they didn't stop getting into trouble with their antics so often.[2]
