An Invisibility Cloak is a wizarding cloak which renders whoever or whatever is under its cover invisible.
About[]
Invisibility Cloaks are very rare and valuable in the wizarding world. Some are woven with the hair of a Demiguise which has a coat that makes them invisible.[1] Other cloaks are enchanted with a strong Disillusionment Charm[3] or a Bedazzling Hex.[4] However, they are not infallible. When they get old, the charms will wear off, they rip and tear and they grow opaque. Spells can counter the charms to reveal what is underneath, or cause the cloaks to get holes in them.[5][6]
Harry Potter had a one-of-a-kind Cloak of Invisibility which didn't fade, rip or tear. It is a fabled object, one of the three Deathly Hallows purportedly created by Death.[4]
History[]
Ordinary Invisibility Cloaks have been available for centuries. Bartemius Crouch Snr. owned an invisibility cloak that he used to hide Bartemius Crouch Jnr. under when he was being controlled by the Imperius Curse. Barty Junior later used it to get around when he escaped, and it was helpful when he killed Barty Senior.[7]
Alastor Moody owned at least two invisibility cloaks which he gave to Mundungus Fletcher[8] and Sturgis Podmore[9] to borrow in the Second Wizarding War. Arthur Weasley hid under one when he was on guard in the Ministry of Magic.[10]
