A Kappa is a Japanese water demon which lives in shallow ponds and rivers. They feed on human blood.[1]
About[]
A Kappa looks like a monkey with fish scales instead of hair. They have a hollow at the top of their head which holds water. The more water, the stronger the Kappa is. They feed on human blood and have webbed hands to strangle anyone that disturbes it.[2] To persuade a Kappa to leave someone alone, they have to be thrown a cucumber with the person's name inscribed on it. If one is in a confrontation with a Kappa, the best way to defeat it is by tricking it into bowing, because any water in they have in their head to fall out which weakens it.[1]
History[]
In September 1993, Professor Lupin taught third-year Defence Against the Dark Arts students about Kappas.[2]
Trivia[]
- Erroneously, Severus Snape stated Kappas are more commonly found in Mongolia.[3] This contradicts both in-series lore and real life mythology. As new revisions of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them have been released and not corroborated Severus' information, he is shown to be incorrect.
