The kelpie is a shapeshifting water demon in the wizarding world.
About[]
The kelpie is able to take any form but usually takes one of a horse with bulrushes. They take their time trying to lure people into riding them; once they do, they then drag them down underwater to eat. A Placement Charm will put a bridle around their head that renders them docile. After devouring the rider, their entrails will float to the surface.[1]
Although they live in designated areas to prevent Muggles discovering them, the kelpie cannot be confined by the Muggle-repelling charm. They have only one goal in life which is to attract humans towards their home. They have their own power's which cancel out the spell's effect.[2]
History[]
Scotland is home to the largest kelpie in the world. Residing in Loch Ness, the "Loch Ness Monster" appears to enjoy the publicity it is receiving. However, this has also resulted in Scotland repeatedly failing to abide by Clause 73 and being fined by the International Confederation of Wizards.[3] This particular kelpie prefers to take the form of a sea serpent. If it is approached by Muggle investigators, the kelpie will temporarily turn into an otter. The International Confederation of Wizards only realised it was a kelpie when wizards saw it turn back into a sea serpent.[1]
Gilderoy Lockhart has written a book on how to capture a kelpie. When he tried to give Rubeus Hagrid advice on capturing one, Hagrid thought it was condescending because he already knew how to.[4]
