Kendra Dumbledore is a character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She is a Muggle-born witch, the wife of Percival Dumbledore and the mother of Albus, Aberforth and Ariana Dumbledore.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Kendra was a Muggle-born witch who married Percival Dumbledore in the late nineteenth century. They had three children together: Albus, Aberforth and Ariana.[1] When her children were growing up, she used to read them bedtime stories. Her version of The Warlock's Hairy Heart was identical to the original written in ancient runes.s.[2] Albus preferred to hear her read The Tale of the Three Brothers but used to argue with Aberforth who liked Grumble the Grubbly Goat.s.[3]

Ariana's illness[]

When Ariana was six, she was attacked by Muggle boys who saw her using magic. They wanted her to show them how to do it and were upset when she couldn't teach them.[1] The trauma caused Ariana to lose control of her magic and she became a danger to others and of breaking the International Statute of Secrecy. Kendra and Percival decided to keep the truth hidden because they wanted Ariana to stay at home instead of being sent away to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. However, Percival was so angry that he hunted down the three boys and attacked them in revenge for what they did. Percival wouldn't tell the wizarding authorities why he did it and they sentenced him to Azkaban.[4]

Kendra moved with her children to Godric's Hollow to get away from everyone who knew what Percival did. She kept Ariana in the house[1] to the point that her neighbours, including Bathilda Bagshot, didn't even know she had a daughter. Others thought Ariana was a Squib and Kendra was embarrassed which was why she kept her existence secret.[5]

Death[]

When Ariana was fourteen, she lost control of her magic and the force killed Kendra. Ariana was left under the guardianship of her older brothers. A few years later, she was killed herself during a duel between her brothers and Gellert Grindelwald.[1][6] After the death of Albus died nearly a hundred years later, there were books and articles written about Kendra and her family.[5]

Appearance[]

By the time she was killed, Kendra was "not as young as she was". Harry Potter saw a photo of her in which she looked "formally composed". Her face is of a "carved quality" and she looks Native American, perhaps indicating her heritage.[5]
