Harry Potter Books Wiki

The kitchen corridor is a corridor in Hogwarts Castle through a door in the Entrance Hall. It leads to the basement level of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The corridor has at least two other doors, one which leads to the Hufflepuff Basement and the other to the Hogwarts kitchens.

About[]

The door to the corridor is to the left of the marble staircase in the Entrance Hall if one is going up the stairs. It is broad and has very bright torches with several portraits of food. At least one of these portraits is of a gigantic silver fruit bowl with a pear. The pear has to be tickled in order for the door to the Hogwarts kitchens to open.[1]

To the right-hand side of the corridor are a few barrels that conceal the entrance to the Hufflepuff Basement. To enter, one has to tap the barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row in the rhythm of 'Helga Hufflepuff'. The lid then swings open to a corridor that will lead to the common room. However, if the wrong lid is tapped or in the wrong rhythm, the intruder will be doused in vinegar.

Trivia[]

  • In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 12, it says that there is a suit of armour near the kitchens. It's unknown whether it is near the door in the Entrance Hall that leads to the kitchen, or whether it is in the kitchen corridor. Harry Potter says it is "near the kitchens" but it's unknown why he would go to the kitchen corridor at that point unless he was exploring.[2]
