Biography[]
Early life[]
He was an old friend of Walden Macnair.[3]
First Wizarding War[]
At the end of the First Wizarding War, Lucius was one of the first say that Voldemort had controlled him through the Imperius Curse. That was true of a few witches and wizards but it was not true of Malfoy. Many willing Death Eaters would claim they were bewitched to avoid punishment for their crimes. Arthur Weasley did not believe Lucius, and he would later say that Lucius had never needed an excuse to join the Dark side.[4]
Chamber of Secrets[]
On an unknown date, Lucius was appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors at Hogwarts. After his appointment, Lucius submitted a request to Professor Dumbledore to have the children's story of The Fountain of Fair Fortune removed from the Hogwarts library. He felt that the story promoted wizard-Muggle marriage and did not want his son to be influenced into sullying their bloodline. Dumbledore responded that every wizarding family has a non-wizard ancestor and that it is "illogical and immoral" to prevent children learning this because of the hypocrisy of those who deny it.[5]
Lucius was enraged by Dumbledore's response and sent further letters criticising his sanity, parentage and hygiene. The exchange triggered a rivalry during which Lucius wanted to have Dumbledore removed from the post of Head of Hogwarts. In return, Dumbledore started a campaign to have Lucius removed from the position of what he called "Voldemort's Favourite Death Eater".[5]
Lucius was also not in favour of a new law proposed by Arthur Weasley called the Muggle Protection Act. Arthur was conducting raids in search of Dark artefacts and he knew he wanted to raid Malfoy Manor.[6] Lucius hatched a plot to ruin both Dumbledore's and Arthur's careers so he could get revenge[5]and have the law scrapped.[2] He gave Arthur's daughter, Ginny the diary of Voldemort which possessed her into the opening of the Chamber of Secrets for the second time.[7] Dobby learned of the plan and betrayed the family by trying to warn Harry about it.[8] He started selling his Dark artefacts in case Arthur conducted a raid at the house.[6]
In August, he took Draco to Borgin and Burkes and agreed on a price for a few of his artefacts. At Flourish and Blotts during Gilderoy Lockhart's book signing, he saw Arthur and the Weasley family. He insulted Arthur for buying Ginny a second-hand book. He and Arthur started fighting and knocked into a bookshelf, causing heavy books to fall. Lucius was hit in the eye by an Encyclopedia of Toadstools by the time Rubeus Hagrid separated them.[6]
Lucius managed to put Tom Riddle's Diary in Ginny's cauldron when he returned her second-hand Transfiguration book.[6][7] Upon starting her first year at Hogwarts, she reopened the Chamber of Secrets. Lucius warned Draco not to get involved and let the Heir of Slytherin do what they had to. He did not tell Draco a lot about it because he thought it would look suspicious. He only shared how it was opened the first time half a century earlier, during which a student was killed and the person responsible was probably sent to Azkaban.[2]
In December, Arthur raided Malfoy Manor in search of Dark artefacts but Lucius had a secret chamber under the drawing-room floor.[2] Lucius gave an interview about Arthur after he was fined for enchanting a flying car, calling for Arthur's resignation and the Muggle Protection Act to be scrapped. He sent a copy of the article to Draco who found it very funny.[2]
In April, the Serpent of Slytherin petrified two students. Lucius used it to suspend Dumbledore. He threatened to curse the families of the other Board of Governors if they did ot sign an Order of Suspension. He walked to Hagrid's Hut to give it to Dumbledore. Cornelius Fudge was at the Hut to take Rubeus Hagrid to Azkaban because he was thought to be responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets. Lucius insulted Hagrid when he and Fudge objected to Dumbledore's suspension.[9]
However, the decision of the Board is final and Dumbledore told everybody he won't truly be gone at Hogwarts so long that people there stay loyal to him. Lucius called it an "admirable sentiment" and spoke of Dumbledore's "highly individual way of running things". Hagrid guessed that Lucius had threatened the Board and Dumbledore had thought the same but was could not prove it.[9][7]
In May, the governors heard about Ginny supposedly being killed by the monster and reinstated Dumbledore, admitting Lucius had threatened them to get him suspended. Lucius heard Dumbledore had returned so he went to his office to tell him he had broken the rules of suspension and he had to leave. Dumbledore told Lucius he was reinstated and he knew he had illegally bribed the Board. He informed Lucius that the Chamber of Secrets was found, the Basilisk was killed, Ginny was saved and Tom Riddle's Diary was responsible, implying he knew Lucius was behind it.
Harry told Lucius he figured out he gave Ginny the Diary in Flourish and Blotts. Lucius suddenly had to leave in defeat. Having brought Dobby with him, he forced the house-elf to leave with him. Harry chased Lucius who was kicking Dobby and gave him the Diary back. He had put a sock in it which Lucius ripped it off. Dobby caught the sock leaving Lucius frozen in shock because he knew he was now free. He berated and lunged at Harry for costing him his house-elf, causing Dobby to intervene and throw Lucius down the stairs. Lucius gave up and fled the scene. Lucius was later sacked by the Board of Governors.[7]
Prisoner of Azkaban[]
Triwizard Tournament[]
At some point during the summer holidays, Lucius learned from Fudge that the Triwizard Tournament was being revived and held at Hogwarts when school restarted. He told Draco about it despite the event being top secret.[10]
To secure tickets to the Top Box at the final of the 422nd Quidditch World Cup, Lucius made a very generous donation to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. He was invited to the Top Box as the guest of Cornelius Fudge along with his wife and son. They were greeted by Fudge immediately upon their arrival. Lucius was surprised to find Arthur was also there with his family and made patronising comments about his lack of wealth. He briefly stared at Hermione Granger who glared back at him before taking his seat.[11]
