Ludovic Bagman is a wizard and character who first appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ludo had at least one brother, Otto.[2] In his early career, he was a Beater for the Wimbourne Wasps where he was the best they ever had, and for the English National Quidditch team.[1]

Goblet of Fire[]

Ludo was now the very enthusiastic Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports which was in charge of the the 422nd Quidditch World Cup hosted that year in Britain. During the event, an employee of his, Bertha Jorkins, disappeared on a holiday to Albania. Ludo didn't appear to be overly concerned because she had a track record of getting lost. This raised eyebrows at the Ministry with people like Arthur and Percy Weasley who felt he should be more worried about finding her.[2]

Ludo was grateful when Arthur Weasley got his brother, Otto out of trouble with the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. In return, he obtained tickets for Arthur and his family to attend the final of the 422nd Quidditch World Cup.[2] While walking around the campsites, Ludo talked very openly about Bludgers, Quaffles and other things about Quidditch even in the presence of Muggle campsite managers. Ludo was apparently very loose on anti-Muggle security which annoyed the Obliviators working to prevent the Muggles from understanding what event their campsite was hosting.[1]

Arthur later saw Ludo walking through his campsite and called for him. Ludo, wearing the bright yellow robes of the Wimbourne Wasps, excitedly walked over with a spring in his step and talked about how wonderful the day was. He was totally oblivious to the issues other Ministry officials were having, even while they were running past him to try and contain open displays of magic. Arthur introduced Ludo to his four youngest children, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter. He did a small doible take toward Harry and quickly surveyed his scar.[1]

Ludo was running a betting pool on the final and had pockets full of gold already. He asked Arthur if he was interested in placing a bet. He had already taken bets from Roddy Pontner and Agatha Timms with "nice" odds. Arthur put a Galleon on Ireland to win, a small amount that Ludo was disappointed with. Fred and George Weasley bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles and three Knuts and a fake wand on Ireland winning but Viktor Krum getting the Snitch. Arthur protested that they were too young and Percy Weasley thought the fake wand was embarrassing in front of Ludo. Ludo thought the fake wand was great and told Arthur the twins were old enough to know what they want to do.[1]

Ludo thought the twins had no chance of winning with their bet and gave them excellent odds with an extra five Galleons for the fake wand. After giving them their betting slips, he asked Arthur if he knew where Barty Crouch Snr. was because he couldn't understand his Bulgarian counterpart and needed Barty to help translate. Arthur didn't know where he was and asked Ludo if there was any news on Bertha Jorkins. Ludo told Arthur that he hadn't heard a word from Bertha but that he was sure she just got lost because of her poor memory and would wander back into the office in a couple of months. Arthur suggested sending someone out look for her, which Barty Crouch kept telling him to do, but Ludo said he couldn't spare anyone.[1]

Ludo commentated the final for the spectators. The game did not go quite the way Ludo had expected, with Ireland winning but the Bulgarian Seeker Viktor Krum catching the Golden Snitch. He had earlier told Fred and George Weasley that their bet on this happening was very unlikely, and when the game ended, they collected their winnings.[3]

Later life[]

For the 2001 edition of Quidditch Through the Ages, Ludo provided a quote with his opinion. His quote is true to self, with him "[betting] anything it'll be a best-seller".[4]

Appearance[]

Ludo has a rosy complexion, blue eyes and short blond hair. His nose has been broken (presumably by a Bludger) and although he is well-built, it is obvious he is past his prime. He also has a large belly.[1]
