The Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office is a sub-department of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the British Ministry of Magic. It is first referenced to in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

About[]

The Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office control the use of enchantments put on Muggle objects and keep them from being found by a Muggle. For that purpose, the office conducts raids to seize illegal Dark objects. It is said to be a very boring department in comparison to others at the organisation.[1]

The department enacted a law that states it is illegal to enchant a Muggle item if one has the intent to use it for purposes other than what it is designed to do. The Head of the department Arthur Weasley claimed he was able to bewitch a Ford Anglia to fly legally because he did not intend to fly the car.[1]

History[]

In 1991, the department received a report that an enchanted teacup had been purchased at a Muggle antique shop. The buyer had held a tea party during which the teacup went berserk and poured hot tea over everyone. Head of the Office, Arthur Weasley and his colleague, Perkins had to use the Memory Charm to cover it up.[1] In 1992, the department conducted nine raids in a single night. They found a biting kettle, shrinking door-keys and odd ferrets that Arthur was glad to let the Committee on Experimental Charms take over the investigation of.[1]

Before 1993, the department had found and taken at least three cursed books; Sonnets of a Sorcerer, one book that the reader could not stop reading, and another that destroys the reader's eyes.[2] Arthur was still working here in August 1994.[3]

During the 422nd Quidditch World Cup, the office responded when Otto got a lawnmover with unnatural powers. Arthur helped Otto get out of trouble by smoothing everything over. Otto's brother, Ludo Bagman was grateful and gave Arthur tickets for the final of the World Cup.[4]

Employed[]

Arthur Weasley and Perkins are the only wizards employed in the department.[1]
