Mrs Norris is a character in the Harry Potter book series. She is a cat and the pet of Argus Filch, the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She has a strong bond with her owner and helps him patrol the corridors, directing him to any rule-breaking students.
Biography[]
Mrs Norris was adopted by Argus Filch prior to September 1991. She patrolled corridors on her own and if she saw a student put one toe of line, she run off to tell Filch who would appear two seconds later. She was known to track Hagrid around the school which annoyed him. He thought that Filch had asked her to do that.[1]
In mid-September, Mrs Norris and Filch went to the trophy room because they thought they would find students sneaking around at night, but Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom escaped.[2] In December, Mrs Norris heard a noise in the fourth-floor classroom. Harry and Ron had snuck out at night to go to the Mirror of Erised. They hid under the Cloak of Invisibility when she scanned the room, and she left when she saw no-one.[3]
Mrs Norris was skulking at the top of the stairs when Harry, Ron and Hermione snuck past her using the Cloak to get to the third-floor corridor. Ron wanted to kick her, but Harry persuaded him not to. Mrs Norris looked at them, but she couldn't actually see them.[4]
In October 1992, Mrs Norris saw Harry dropping dirt in the corridor and told Filch. Later, she was Petrified by the Serpent of Slytherin and hung up by her tail by Ginny Weasley who left a warning that "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir beware".[5] Filch was very upset and thought that Harry had killed her, but Dumbledore looked at Mrs Norris and told Filch she was not dead and Harry would not have the skill to conduct such a Dark force.[6]
In May, she was revived by a Mandrake Restorative Draught.[7]
Appearance[]
Mrs Norris is a scrawny, dusty cat that has lamp-like bulging eyes.[1]
Trivia[]
- Because of her sneaky, tell-tale behaviour, students hate her and wante to give her a good kick. Rubeus Hagrid finds her so annoying that he wants to introduce her to Fang.[1]
