The Muggle Protection Act was a bylaw written by Arthur Weasley of the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office at the Ministry of Magic. It was designed to protect Muggles from potentially dangerous magical artefacts.[1]

The law enabled the office to conduct raids at houses and businesses in search of Dark artefacts. However, it was very unpopular with many witches and wizards, especially pure-bloods, who thought it was offensive. They presumably didn't want their possessions to be searched because many including Lucius Malfoy collected and kept such Dark artefacts.[1]

History[]

Arthur proposed the law before 4 August 1992. Lucius Malfoy was very opposed to the Protection Act. He was targeted by Arthur Weasley and was worried enough to start selling a lot of the Dark artefacts he had collected to Borgin and Burkes. He then tried to sabotage Arthur's career to delay and get the Act cancelled. He gave Tom Riddle's Diary to Ginevra Weasley which that led to the opening of the Chamber of Secrets.[1][2] The law was passed but in September, Arthur was found in violation of another law he had created, having enchanted a Ford Anglia. In December, Lucius called for Muggle Protection Act to get scrapped because the wizard who proposed it was no longer trustworthy enough to create and uphold laws.[3]
