The book is ancient and huge and it says that Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone which has legendary powers. It transforms metal into pure gold and produces the Elixir of Life which grants the drinker eternal life. There also personal details about Flamel, including his age of 665 at the time the book was written, he lives in Devon, he loves the opera and he has a wife, Perenelle Flamel who is 658 years old.[1]
History[]
Hermione found this book in the Hogwarts library for a bit of light reading. She, Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley were searching for Flamel but she didn't know he was in this book. Later, Harry found a Chocolate Frog Card about Albus Dumbledore and discovered they worked together on alchemy, leading Hermione to remember this book.[1]

- In a very early draft of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Hermione found out about Flamel in a book named Alchemy, Ancient Art and Science. However, in the published book, J. K. Rowling does not say what Hermione's book is called.[2]
