Harry Potter Books Wiki

The Niffler is a beast which appears in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. They are a friendly creature in the wizarding world with a penchant for shiny things and causing havoc trying to get them.

About[]

Appearance[]

The Niffler has a very long snout and black, fluffy fur.[1] They have a pouch in their bellies which looks small but is capable of storing lots of objects in it. The depth of these pouches are similiar to having put an Undetectable Expansion Charm on it.

Character[]

Nifflers live in burrows up to twenty feet deep and produce six to eight young in one litter. They are kind and affectionate towards their owners and friendly towards people, but are destructive towards places and belongings when they scurry to get shiny objects, which is why they should never be kept in a house. The Niffler is native to Britain.[1]

History[]

They are known to be kept by goblins to burrow for shiny objects.[1]

In 1994, Professor Rubeus Hagrid taught about Nifflers to fourth-year Care of Magical Creatures students. He hid leprechaun gold in the earth, and put each student in pairs. He promised a prize for whatever pairing found the most amount of the gold. Ronald Weasley won and was given a piece of Honeydukes chocolate. It may be possible to purchase a Niffler from a pet shop.[2]

In 1995, Lee Jordan used the Levitation Charm to put two Nifflers in Professor Umbridge's office and destroyed the place. Umbridge blamed Hagrid and continued to act unfair when judging Hagrid's teaching.[3][4]
